Behavior Support

Supporting Individuals with Dignity, Respect and Safety

The Behavior Support department at the Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) exists to help individuals with developmental disabilities live fulfilling lives while ensuring their dignity, rights and personal freedoms are upheld. Through a combination of positive strategies, the program aims to create supportive environments that address behavior challenges while promoting trust, respect and equality.

Who We Serve and What We Aim to Achieve

Our Behavior Support department is dedicated to ensuring that individuals with developmental disabilities:

  • receive care that respects their dignity and promotes trust and respect.
  • benefit from services tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.
  • are empowered to make choices that positively impact their lives.
  • are kept safe through the judicious use of restrictive measures, always alongside positive strategies.

Getting Started with Behavior Support

Families and caregivers can access Behavior Support services through MCBDD by contacting their assigned Service and Support Administrator (SSA). The SSA will coordinate a referral to the Behavior Support department, where a Behavior Support Coordinator (BSC) will evaluate the individual’s needs. If appropriate, the coordinator will work with the family and provider to implement strategies or refer the individual to additional community resources.

Highly Qualified Professionals

Behavior Support staff members meet rigorous qualifications, including advanced degrees and professional licensure in fields such as psychology, counseling and social work. With extensive experience in behavioral support and risk reduction, our team is equipped to provide expert care and guidance.

Tools and Resources for Success

Behavior Support strategies are customized to each individual and may include:

  • alternative communication methods.
  • adjustments to physical or social environments.
  • sensory accommodations.
  • schedule modifications.
  • establishing trusting relationships.
  • collaboration across services.

The Behavior Support Coordinator is an integral part of each individual’s team, working closely with SSAs, families and providers. Together, they assess needs, develop strategies and implement plans to create positive outcomes for individuals.
